Rita Johnson -15th April, The Third Dimen-sion (3D workshop to follow in the Autumn)

Rita Johnson uses sketching and stitching support each other. The creation of a sketch book which tries to capture some of the spirit of a place has become a major focal point for Rita whilst travel-ling. By contrast to the immediacy of sketch, the translation into a textile piece is a lengthy process involving a journey with a variety of materials. Rita’s recent work has tended to involve more machine than hand stitching and the subject matter has sometimes dictated a three dimensional approach. She is a member of O2 textiles. http://www.02textiles.co.uk/RitaJohnson.htm

Nodeen Salmon is a member of Threadsx4 www.threadsx4.co.uk . Her first memory is sitting on her grandma’s knee in Jamaica turning the handle of the Singer sewing ma-chine while she guided the fabric. She now specialises in machine embroidered land-scapes

Everyone had a lovely day at this workshop and for once we all left with a finished item. Alex had brought with her a lovely selection of materials to form the front of our bags and had kindly cut out our interlinings and a template to save us time. This was a good job as it was hard to choose between the materials and as usual I ig-nored my plan of the material going with a black and gold dress as soon as I spotted the Peacock fabric!
The morning was happily spent machine embroidering the fabric until a few minutes before lunch when I had to give up on time consuming detail and just add a few beads. After lunch we had to get going on the construction, putting all the layers to-gether and struggling with the thickness round the hinge. Fortunately Alex helped us all individually to attach our clasps, which must have been very stressful for her.
Alex proved to be a very friendly tutor and although the pressure was on to attach the clasp before the end of the session the atmosphere was still fairly relaxed and we had a chance to see how others were getting on with their designs.
This workshop made an excellent start to our new set of workshops which I hope will be well supported. It proved too difficult to find a venue for dates that Clive Barnett was available in April, so he will be coming in November.

In February we had a very popular weekend working with jenny O’Leary from Shropshire. She is a very inspirational and generous tutor. As a result of this it was decided to run again in June on a Monday and Tuesday in an effort to minimise cost and make the course as accessible as possible. The course details and programme is below. There are 10 places at £170 for the full experience. There are also 4 nonresidential places available at £120 omitting breakfast and the overnight room. Please apply for these quickly as I expect them to be popular. A booking form is attached together with a sheet of photos taken at the February to whet your appetite.

Colne and Colchester Branch are really pleased to be able to restart our annual Spring Talk, which will be open to all members of EG and the public.

James will be talking about his technique and career. He uses mark-making, colour and texture to explore emotions, thoughts, memories, our real and imagined lives, and will elaborate on his working methods. Initially a freelance embroiderer he worked in Fashion with clients such as Givenchy and Conran. Following a move to France he became more interested in personal workand education. Recently he exhibited with the Textile Study Group in “Individual and Collective” at the Knitting and Stitching Show 2011.

His approach to embroidery encompasses modern art and line, something that our contemporary art gallery Firstsite reflects in its choice of works. (Stay on and see their current exhibition while you are with us!).

SUFFOLK EAST START THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE

The theme for our New Year Social was Fantastic Felt and we did, indeed, have a fantastic time. The weather was snow free (even if the car park wasn’t!), so no cancellations from our demonstrators, who were coming from rural areas, and also a good turn out from our members, who were full of praise for an eventful and inspiring afternoon. People who dropped in “just for an hour” ended up staying the whole time. Tracy Ranger, of Gedgrave Wensleydales, worked non-stop supervising the making of felt flowers. Jan Lovell’s embellisher demonstration gave everyone loads of ideas (and confidence) and has resulted in a long waiting list to borrow this previously underused asset. Cathy Newman (aka Sticky Paws) was showing the most wonderful fine felted scarves, delicate as cobwebs, and always seemed to be surrounded by eager people asking questions. Everyone seemed to find Jayne Stansfeld’s sumptuous hand spun yarns irresistible, with good reason I might add. The response to the invitation to contribute to a Member’s Gallery of felt items was an inspiration in itself. There were bags, scarves, bowls, jackets and hangings. It was a wall of colour and texture and we had to put out extra tables, there were so many items. Last, but not least, the homemade cakes, were, as always, delicious.
